How to Measure Your Windows for Custom Shades

Getting the measurement right is the single most important step in ordering custom window shades. A shade that is a quarter-inch too wide will bind against the frame. A shade that is a quarter-inch too narrow will let in light gaps on both sides. Custom shades are made to your exact specifications and cannot be returned once ordered, so accurate measurement matters before anything else.

Start by deciding whether you prefer an inside or outside mount. An inside mount sits within the window opening and leaves the trim visible. An outside mount sits above or outside the opening and can provide more overlap. For an inside mount, record the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, then measure the height at several points. Keep all of these measurements and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific shade. For an outside mount, measure the area you want the shade to cover, including the overlap around the window. Check the space for brackets and the clearance around trim and handles.
